THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is swinging into action to avert another spell of agitation over the self- financing college fee issue in the context of the SFI calling for a State-wide education bandh on Monday. The Government has decided to collect only Government fee in self-financing engineering colleges over which it has control. It has also succeeded in persuading some private self-financing colleges to offer scholarships to meritorious students. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is holding another round of talks with leaders of various political parties here on Sunday evening. But a press note from the office of the Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan said the Opposition parties would not take part in the talks called by Mr. Chandy. The note said it was decided very clearly at the all-party meeting held on July 5 that government fee would be implemented for merit seats in all self-financing colleges under the Government. The unilateral announcement by Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer that government fee cannot be implemented for merit seats in government self-financing colleges has rendered any discussion on the issue meaningless, the release added. The names of colleges that have agreed to toe the Government line fully by going in for Government fee or partially by announcing scholarships were announced by the CEE on Saturday. They include the University College of Engineering at Karyavattom here. The students who get admission to Government seats in this college need pay a fee of only Rs.6,200The tuition fee will be Rs.4,000 for students who get admission in the Government quota in engineering colleges of the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education at Perumon, Kidangoor, Vadakara, Thalassery and Thrikkaripur. This amount should be remitted at the allotment centre. Those who are allotted Government seats at IHRD colleges at Adoor, Chengannur, Thrikkakara Model, Poonjar, Attingal, Kottarakkara, Cherthala, Kallooppara and Karunagapally, LBS colleges at Kasaragod and Poojappura, Centre for Continuing Education College at Munnar and the KSRTC College (Sri Chithra at Pappanamcode in Thiruvananthapuram) need pay only Rs.6,200 during allotment time. Fee concessions and scholarships have been announced in some private self- financing colleges too. The Principal of MES Engineering College, Kuttipuram, said that 75 per cent of the fee of Rs.38,700 fixed by the K.T. Thomas Committee would be given as scholarship to students who have secured ranks up to 5,000 in the entrance test. The Sree Narayana Gurukulam College of Engineering, Kolencherry, also announced a scholarship of Rs.15,000 for those who have secured ranks up to 5,000. Those with ranks below 2,000 who get admission to METS School of Engineering, Mala, too need pay only Government fee. The scholarships will be available only after joining. Students should, therefore, remit the fee of Rs.38,700 at the time of allotment.
