CHENNAI: More teams, increased prize money and a title sponsor in Phoenix Tirupur form the highlights of the ninth edition of the John memorial State-level volleyball tournament to be conducted by the Nellai Friends and Dr. Sivanthi Clubs at the Mayor Radhakrishnan stadium from July 11 to 17. Briefing newsmen on Friday, W.I. Davaram, President of the Nellai Friends Volleyball Club, expressed hope that in keeping with the rich response for the sport seen in the recently conducted world-level volleyball championship, the tournament will have good attendance. In addition to being a keen fare, the tournament this time has 13 men's (eight last time) and six women's teams. Last year ICF and Indian Bank were the men's winner and runner-up respectively while in the women's section Dr. Sivanthi Club and P.S.G.R. Krishnammal College had finished in that order. The men's winner gets Rs. 20,000 cash prize and the Daily Thanthi trophy and the women's winner pockets Rs. 10,000 and the W.I. Davaram trophy. While the men's competition will be a league-cum-knock-out format the women's will be a straight league. A.K. Chitrapandian, Organising Secretary said IOC and IOB had come forward as co-sponsors for the tournament. The teams: (Men): Indian Bank, ICF, TNEB, Central Excise, AGORC, Income Tax, IOB, SBI, TSP, City police, S. Railway, Cuddalore Police and Vulture. Women: Dr. Sivanthi Club, SDAT, SAI, Lotus Club Thadagam, TSP and MRC. Special Correspondent
