Bid to organise agitation of Adivasis at Nainakonam foiled

PREVENTIVE ARREST: Members of the Porattam group who were arrested by the Kollam police on Saturday.

KOLLAM: The Kollam East police arrested ten activists of the Adivasi Samara Sanghom, better known as the Porattam group, here on Saturday morning. The arrested include four women and a 15-year-old boy.

The arrests followed a tip-off received by Kollam SP M. Sugathan. The arrested include those on bail in connection with cases relating to the attack on an Asian Development Bank team in Thiruvananthapuram and the Muthanga agitation.

They arrived in Kollam on buses from different parts of the State, including Wayanad and Malappuram, and assembled at the railway station to proceed to attend a meeting at Nainakonam, near Navaikulam in Thiruvananthapuram district, for organising an Adivasi agitation against the recent eviction of a group of Adivasis from a government land there.

The police said they were arrested under Section 151 of the Cr.PC so to prevent them from getting involved in any cognisable offence. All of them will be let off on Sunday, the police said.

The meeting was scheduled at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The police said that incriminating documents, including leaflets calling for agitations, had been seized from them. The police gave the identities of the arrested as Hussein (34), captain of the team, Vijayan (28), Madhavan (25), Kannan (15), Sunil Babu (26), Rajan (30), Bindu (20), Maalu (18), Paaru (37) and Sulochana (29). All except Hussein hailed from scheduled communities.

All of them were questioned by the Intelligence wing of the Special Branch police. Hussein told the police that the Navaikulam meeting was to chart out the course of the agitation at Nainakonam. He said the land in question was now under the control of private individuals. The police said that 15-year-old Kannan had passed SSLC examination this year in high grades and joined Plus Two. His father, Babu, is from the Ayyankali Pada which had in 1996 held the then Collector of Palakkad W.R. Reddy captive.
