Kandadevi festival

This refers to the Madras High Court's direction to the Sivaganga district administration to ensure the full participation of Dalits in the Kandadevi car festival (June 18). Though Article 17 of the Constitution has abolished untouchability, it has not been eradicated from the minds of the people.

A change in the attitude of `upper' castes towards Dalits is the crying need of the hour. The court ruling should be enforced in letter and spirit.

C. Paramarthalingam,
Madurai
