Use law to combat eco problems, students told

Use law as an effective tool for combating environmental problems.

This advice was given to law students at the 10-day summer school on environmental advocacy, organised by Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal, and Trust for Research and Education on Environment and Sustainable Development, Madurai, at Kodaikanal recently.

About 20 law students selected from all over the country were trained in advocacy skills for protecting the environment. Special focus was made on resolving environmental problems through neighbourhood remedies and alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

Many speakers, explaining the role of law in social change, especially in environmental protection, advised participants to carefully read provisions in environmental law to understand and interpret the law properly and use it as an effective tool for combating environmental problems.

The Additional Director of Environmental Ministry, Uday Bhaskar, trained the students in environmental impact assessment and public hearing.

Goa-based V. N. Khare College of Law student Rinkie was declared as best student-advocate in a moot court competition held during the training session. The university Vice-Chancellor, D. Janaki, inaugurated the summer school.
