Chennai: It was a smooth first round for most of the seeds in the 19th Indian Bank-Vels National under-9 chess championship held at the Vels College of Arts & Science, Pallavaram, Chennai. The top seed in girls, Chandana Priya Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, needed less than 30 minutes to take advantage of the poor opening knowledge of Kerala's Linet Rose to win in 32 moves. But the second seed Priya (AP) had a long game before checkmating Mahalakshmi (TN) on the 73rd turn. In the boys section, top-seeded G.V. Sai Krishna from Vijayawada spotted a tactic with his knight to win on the 25th move. His tiny opponent, Kumaran from Tamil Nadu, who required two chairs to have a view of the board, went down bravely after sacrificing his bishop. Thirteenth seed Karma Pandya of Gujarat lost to lower rated Niraj Saripally of Goa in a pawn ending. In the last game, Vibhor Sharma of Punjab sat for an hour without making a move. He ran his time out without making a move as his opponent Eswanth Devkumar (TN) had a mate in one on hand. Earlier, before the games began, Dr. Ishari Ganesh, Chairman of the Vels Group of Colleges, made the symbolic first move to flag off the event. The start list consisted of 122 boys and 70 girls.
