Double crown for Tamil Nadu

Sports Reporter

ERODE: : Tamil Nadu boys and girls have easy wins over their opponents to emerge champions of the 13th mini national volleyball championship at the Bharathi Vidya Bhavan indoor stadium courts here on Sunday.

The boys outplayed Uttar Pradesh 25-14, 25-8, 25-10, while the girls defeated Andhra Pradesh 25-22, 25-11, 25-21.

The boys' final was expected to be a close affair, but it turned out to be a no contest. Parthiban, Andrews and Mohan stood like a rock at the net. Anything over the net was blocked effectively or killed instantly.

Sakthi Kumar and Veerachenan supported the trio with their effective placements. And that was enough for the team to win the crown. The girls, on the other hand, started off cautiously. Manemma, the Andhra Pradesh captain, who blunted the Karnataka defence on Saturday, looked lost in the middle. In fact, there were none to feed her at the net. That turned out to be a big plus for the home team in the first two sets.

However, in the third set, the visitor fought back from a rather hopeless situation to level scores at 17. At this juncture, Preethi spiked gloriously and so did Kalaivani. The duo punctured the defence time and again to take the set and match.

One should also attribute TN's success to its captain Karthigeswari. The Erode Sports School student played a sensible all-round game. Manemma of Andhra Pradesh and Preethi of Tamil Nadu were declared the promising youngsters in the girls' section, while Kiran Dhawaskar of Goa and D. Wales Andrews were the promising boys to walk away with the awards.

The results: Boys: Final: Tamil Nadu bt Uttar Pradesh 25-14, 25-8, 25-11. Third place: Karnataka bt Goa 25-19, 25-17, 25-22. Girls: Tamil Nadu bt Andhra Pradesh 25-22, 25-11, 25-21. Third place: Kerala bt Karnataka 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-11.
