CHENNAI: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission (NAAC/UGC) has given Grade A score to the Women's Christian College, Chennai. The Principal and Secretary of the college, Rita Jacob Cherian, said a peer team of the NAAC had observed that the choice-based credit system, the holistic value education, student senate and their activities, infrastructure facilities, faculty development programmes, had been commendable. The team was also happy with the involvement of the alumni in the welfare of the college. The college which turns 90 this July, has moved from 41 students and seven faculty members, intermediate courses and a B.A. in History to 2,366 students, 144 faculty members, offering 17 under-graduate and seven post-graduate courses through the aided and self-financing streams. The aided stream of the college became autonomous in 1982. Prof. Rita Cherian said psychology, nutrition, computer science and English have been unique contributions to students by the College. In the report submitted to the NAAC, the democratic features of the college, its keenness in participatory governance, the dedication of the teaching and non-teaching staff and the alumni association, the ambience which promotes spiritual and cultural harmony and the spirit of oneness that permeates all activities, were highlighted. The NAAC's peer team, which visited the college on March 21, 22 and 23, recommended granting of A Grade accreditation for a period of five years. The NAAC published its results on the web on May 20.
