Birth centenary of Tamil scholar

CHENNAI: A number of events have been planned to mark the birth centenary of M.P. Sivagnanam, freedom fighter, Tamil scholar and the last chairman of the now-defunct Legislative Council.

Essay-writing and oratorical contests, special lectures, cultural programmes, poets' meets, and "patti mandram" will be organised during June 1-15. Those who wish to participate in the events will have register themselves on or before May 28 with the Divine Life Society at AJ Block, 7, II Street, Anna Nagar, Chennai 600040 (Phone nos: 26210523 and 9841284248), a press release from the society says. The centenary of the late leader falls on June 26.

Nominated to varsity syndicate

Coimbatore: The Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chancellor of Bharathiar University, Surjit Singh Barnala, has nominated three persons to university's Syndicate for three years.

They are: B. Suresh, Principal and Professor of Pharmacology, JSS College, Ooty, Usha K.Mehta, Honorary Scientist, Bharathiar University, and P.V. Ravi, chairman, Park Group of Educational Institutions.

Schools challenge closure notice

CHENNAI: A batch of nursery and primary schools, directed to close down the institutions from June 1 owing to their failure to get recognition from the Government, have approached the High Court for restraining the Government from enforcing the order.

The institutions have been asked to get certificates from the jurisdictional tahsildars and a chartered engineer found in the District Collector's panel in Form D. Since many of the institutions had not complied with the requirement, the Director of Elementary Education had started issuing notices this month, directing them to close down from June 1.

Challenging the orders, the schools submitted they had not been given sufficient time and added that many schools had obtained the planning permission from the respective local bodies and even started building constructions. Justice Prabha Sridevan admitted the batch of petitions, and ordered notices to the Government, returnable by May 31.

USEFI presentation

CHENNAI: The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI), Chennai, will organise a presentation on `writing skills for TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT and speaking skills for TSE,' on May 31 at Vani Mahal, T.Nagar.

A press release said Anam K. Govardhan, professor of English and Coordinator, TESL programme, Western Connecticut State University, Danbury, Connecticut, will be the resource person. Those interested in attending the programme should register in advance. (Ph: 2811 2049).

1 killed in bus-lorry smash

VILLUPURAM: A 32-year-old farmer was killed and 28 others were injured when a transport corporation bus rammed into a stationary tractor-trailer near Selliamman Temple at Ginjee in the early hours on Wednesday.

It is learnt that when a group of 10 farmers were bringing paddy by the tractor-trailer one of the tyres got deflated.

The bus rammed into the trailer and pushed it for some distance before the trailer got disengaged by rolling down a slope.

Assembly Assurance panel to visit Tiruvarur

Tiruvarur: The Assembly Assurance Committee, headed by L.Santhanam, MLA, will visit Tiruvarur district tomorrow.

The committee will review the work on Madukkur-Parakalakottai Road, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB)'s sub-station at Kottur, Thirumeni lake in the morning.

The committee will hold a discussion with the Collector, P. Ekambaram, and other officials at the Collectorate in the afternoon and verify how many assurances given on the Floor of the Assembly have been implemented.

The members of the committee are T. Arumugam, S.N.M. Ubayathullah, M. Karthi, P. Krishnamurthy, R. Saroja, Suryakala, T. Dhanabal and T. Yasodha. — Staff Reporter

Training programme on mushroom products

PUDUKOTTAI: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in the district will organise a two-day training programme on "Preparation of value added mushroom products" for mushroom growers and women self-help groups.

The training, which commences on May 26, would be held in the KVK functioning at the National Pulses Research Centre (NPRC) at Vamban in the district.

Collector inspects development works

Tiruvarur: The Collector, P. Ekambaram, has said that in the year 2004-2005, development works numbering 601 worth Rs. 2.64 crores have been taken up in Thiruthuraipoondi panchayat union.

Inspecting various development works in the union today, he reviewed the construction of a taluk office building at a cost of Rs. 40 lakhs at Thiruthuraipoondi.

He inspected the work on self-help group building at Bamini at a cost of rs 1.10 lakhs and the rural road laid to a distance of 1.35 kms.

The collector inspected the construction of the compound wall around the Government Hospital at Thiruthuraipoondi and a building on the same premises. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.30 feet today.

The inflow was 590 cusecs and the discharge 867 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Couple commit suicide

Nagercoil: A couple committed suicide after giving poison coated biscuits to their four years old son on Tuesday night.

According to police sources, Balakrishnan alias Kannan (35) of Christopher Nagar near Nagercoil who was running a super market at Vadaserry, took this extreme step along with his wife Seetha by consuming poison after killing their son Vijaya Madhavan.

His brother Kesavan informed the police, who recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem. — Staff Reporter

Doctor's house burgled

Nagercoil: The house of a doctor was burgled on Wednesday.

According to sources, Muthukumar along with his family members, went to his relative's house at Tirunelveli when some miscreants entered his house through the backyard, broke open the bureau and decamped with 32 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.25,000 in cash. — Staff Reporter

Parents-in-law assaulted

Tuticorin: The police have registered cases against Sakthivel, 42, Raja, 26, and Michel, 26, who had allegedly attacked a couple at Kovilpatti on Tuesday.

They said that Michel had married the daugther of Mani and Thangammal. Due to some family dispute, he along with the other accused attacked his parents-in-law with a sickle. The injured were admitted to Kovilpatti Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Held on assault charge

Tuticorin: Arockiasamy (40) was arrested on the charge of assaulting three persons at Keela Eral on Tuesday.

He had a wordy duel with Karuppasamy, Pon Karupasamy and Sankar over some trivial issue and pelted stones. The Ettayapuram police are investigating the case. — Staff Reporter

Boy commits suicide

Tuticorin: A 14-year-old boy committed suicide today by hanging from the roof of his house at Taruvaikulam.

Police said Antony John Peter hit his younger sister Sharmila in a playful mood but she fell down and remained unconscious. Assuming that she was dead, he hanged from the roof. — Staff Reporter

Impersonators nabbed

Tuticorin: Seven persons, who posed as officials from the Department of Mines and Minerals and demanded money from a lorry driver near Ettayapuram, were arrested on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the Keelanambiapuram and Mudalipatti sector. Madasamy, Sakkaiah, Ganesh Murugan, Marimuthu, Joseph, Palaniselvan and Samuel Selvaraj, who came in a Tata Sumo, intercepted the lorry. Posing as officials, they told the driver Rajagopal that they had known about illegal transportation of sand in his vehicle and demanded money to settle the issue amicably.

The driver asked them to prove their identities. Immediately, the gang fled from the scene. Rajagopal brought the matter to the notice of highway patrol. The team chased the car and nabbed the accused. All the accused were remanded to judicial custody later, police sources said. — Staff Reporter

PDS kerosene seized

ERODE: The Civil Supplies officials seized a tanker lorry with 125 litres of kerosene meant for supply to ration card-holders. On receiving information, the Civil Supplies officials conducted a surprise check in Veerappanchatram area, Erode on Tuesday evening. They noticed a person filling kerosene in a lorry. The kerosene was meant for supply to ration card-holders.

The officials arrested two persons and also seized the containers used for keeping kerosene. - Staff Reporter

RI for three

ERODE: The Judicial Magistrate, Sri Devi, sentenced three accused in a theft case to five months rigorous imprisonment. The prosecution case was that on February 13, 2005, Nallasivam, a farmer of Nanjai Uthukuli, Erode taluk, after parking his scooter in Paneerselvam Park area, went for shopping. When he returned, he noticed that his scooter was missing. On a complaint filed by him, the Erode Town Crime Police arrested three persons and recovered the vehicle.

Handed over

ERODE: Palm-leaf inscriptions, which are 300-year-old, were handed over to the Erode Museum on Tuesday.

Palaniappan, a retired Tamil teacher of Jambai village in Bhavani taluk, used to collect traditional inscriptions. He handed over 309 palm leaves, to Museum officials.

Man killed in accident

ERODE: A person was killed in a road accident on Tuesday night.

According to police, Mohan (20), a van driver residing in Ennamangalam, Anthiyur, was returning home in his motorcycle when it was knocked down by a vehicle. Mohan was crushed to death on the spot. - Staff Reporter
