CHENNAI: The overall pass percentage in the Plus Two examinations improved marginally this year as compared to last year.

The results of the higher secondary examinations released on Wednesday showed that 76.8 per cent of 5.12 lakh candidates had passed (as against 76.3 per cent among 5.06 lakh candidates last year).

G. Sathya of Kurinji Higher Secondary School, Namakkal, was the topper (1,185/1,200 marks), followed by Asha Benazir of Rosemary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai (1,183 marks).

The third place was shared by Ayisha of S.V. Mandir Matric, Uthangarai, Krishnagiri district, and R. Srinath of SRV Boys HSS, Rasipuram, Namakkal district, who scored 1,181 marks.

The toppers had taken Tamil as their first language.

Chennai's students came out tops among those who took other languages.

Although they scored more in terms of marks and aggregate, they are not eligible for State ranks, awards and scholarships.

Leading the pack was the DAV group of schools with its Gopalapuram branch securing the first two overall ranks. DAV HSS, Mogappair, shared the third rank with Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

C. Sujana and R. Shobana of DAV HSS, Gopalapuram, bagged the first two ranks, scoring 1,190 and 1,189 respectively. S. Shivraj of DAV HSS, Mogappair, and Maria Cheryl Fernandez of Good Shepherd MHSS came third with 1,188 marks each.

While 79.3 per cent girls passed the examinations, only 74.1 per cent boys were able to do so. A total of 2,82,003 students scored 60 per cent and above.

Announcing the results, D. Jagannathan, Director of Government Examinations, said supplementary examinations for those who had failed in three subjects and above would be held between June 24 and July 7. Applications would be available from May 25-31.

Successful candidates can collect their mark sheets on May 25.
