A. V. C. College in Mayiladuturai is conducting a fortnight-long coaching programme on science subjects for 50 boys and 50 girls drawn from rural schools in Perambalur and Nagapattinam districts under `Young Student Scientist Programme,' sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. V. Radhakrishnan, principal, A.V.C.College, presided over the programme, which was inaugurated by R. Kirlosh Kumar, Sub-Collector of Mayiladuturai, recently. G. Vasudevan, Head, Department of Chemistry, A.V.C.College, the course director, said that under the `Young Student Scientist Programme,' 50 best students from rural schools in each district would be selected by conducting an entrance test. They would be taught science subjects for a month every year by providing them free boarding and lodging facilities. He said that college teachers would give them coaching on the science subjects. The programme was aimed at creating awareness of science subjects among students and encourage them study pure science courses in higher education instead of concentrating on professional courses. The students would also be taught yoga and sports. They would be taken for an industrial visit also, he added.
