Role of Sanskrit stressed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Sanskrit in the ancient times and English in the modern times played the role of a unifying language in the country, said Karan Singh, MP.

Addressing the academic community during the Sankara Jayanti 2005 celebrations at the Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit on Sunday, he said that though both the languages were spoken by a minority, nevertheless they managed to cut across the barriers of language and religion in almost the entire country. "Sanskrit was not confined to a particular State, but was truly a pan-Indian language. All Indian languages were deeply influenced by Sanskrit except Tamil and a few North-Eastern languages," Dr. Singh said.

Sanskrit is a language to be cherished, treasured and propagated since the Indian culture has originated from it.

The West takes pains to learn Greek and Latin since these languages hold the roots of their culture. The ancient texts of Hindu philosophy in Sanskrit hold in them almost every facet of human knowledge, he said. Dr. Singh said that he would take up the matter of proclaiming Sankara's birthday as National Philosopher's Day with the Union Government.
