Meet on free software

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE) and the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IITM-K), among others, are organising a two-day conference on free software and related concepts here from May 28. Delegations from Venezuela, Brazil and Italy will attend the conference, according to a press release. . — Special Correspondent


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Music albums/video albums etc. produced in Kerala have to get certification from the Central Board of Film Certification before being released or sold. This is mandatory and non-compliance will invite penal action. Films/short films and other visual productions on video/CD/VCD format also require Censor Board certification, according to a press note issued by the Additional Regional Officer, E.N. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has announced a subsidy of Rs.25,000 each for the repair and maintenance of snake boats. It will be made available to 20 boats which participate in at least one major boat race. The amount will be sanctioned by the Tourism Director on the basis of certificates issued by the RDOs. — Staff Reporter

Bail granted

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to K.A John, father of film actress Jomol, in a cheating case filed by the actress. Justice K.P. Balachandran ordered that in the event of arrest, he be released on bail on executing a bond for Rs.25,000 with two solvent sureties to the like sum. The other condition was that he should not leave the Sate without the permission of the court concerned. The Kozhikode Session's court had earlier dismissed his anticipatory bail petition. — Staff Reporter

Petition adjourned

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday adjourned to Monday the hearing on a petition filed by Coca-Cola seeking to implement an earlier High Court directive to the Perumatty grama panchayat to renew the company's licence for running the factory in Plachimada. The petition was adjourned by a Bench comprising Justice M. Ramachadran and Justice K.P. Balachandran. The court, while allowing an appeal filed by the company against the single judge directive to stop drawing of groundwater, directed the panchayat to consider the application of the company seeking renewal of licence and pass orders if such application was filed within two weeks. — Staff Reporter

Accused in spirit case arrested

PATHANAMTHITTA: Excise officials arrested the main accused in a major spirit seizure case, Suresh, 29, of Azhoor, after a chase in the town on Friday.

According to excise sources, the case was related to the seizure of 2,800 litres of illicit spirit in Konni a year ago.

He has been remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Office-bearer elected

KOLLAM: The former president of the Rotary Club of Karaikudi, S. Periyannan, has been elected president of the Rotary district 3210 for 2007-2008.

The district comprises five southern revenue districts of Kerala and six districts of Tamil Nadu.

In a statement here, the general convener of Rotary zones 10 and 11, K. Rajan, said that all the 25 Rotary clubs in Kollam district would extend a reception to Mr. Periyannan when he arrives here on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Techno-management course

KOZHIKODE: NITC-IBM ACE Centre, a joint venture of the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) with International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, will be starting a techno-management course for commerce students. The course is designed by IIT, Kanpur.
