`Ice-cold' or in-charge

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: They have made it to the top through perseverance and after putting in nearly three decades of service. Yet, on reaching there, most principals of educational institutions find themselves out in the cold for more often than not, they are given the designation as in-charge or "i/c" principals and not "principals."

This point came to the fore at a programme organised by the Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University to felicitate its members on the verge of superannuation here on Sunday. The in-charge principals are sore at the fact that for all the attendant tensions they endure with the post, there is no sense of professional stability attached to it.

"Ice-cold" and not in-charge (i/c) is how K. Vedavyasa Rao, principal of Govindadasa College, Suratkal, one of those felicitated chose to describe his designation. Gilbert Sequeira, principal of St. Aloysius Evening College, Mangalore in his own imitable style urged the association to take up the matter with the authorities concerned and resolve this issue soon.
