Former High Court judge dead

COIMBATORE: The former Judge of the Madras High Court, R. Sengottuvelan, died here on Thursday after a brief illness.

Born on April 25, 1925 at Paramathi-Velur in Namakkal district, he started practising law at the High Court in 1948. He became Judge of the High Court in 1979. After retiring in 1987, he was Judge of the court trying cases under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Act and then Chairman of the Madras State Administrative Tribunal.

Later, he settled in Coimbatore and held many positions including that of the Director, vice-president and president of the Coimbatore City Cooperative Bank and the Director of the Coimbatore District Central Cooperative Bank.

A person with interest in diverse fields such as education, literature and community service, he also headed the Gandhi Ashram founded by Rajaji in Tiruchengode. He authored a book Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act.
