CHENNAI: A writ petition seeking a report on the alleged blasting and removal of a Lord Shiva shrine from a temple at Thirukkurungudi temple near Nanguneri and a direction to authorities to register a case against people responsible for the removal has been filed in the Madras High Court. The petitioner, Krishnamachari, secretary of the Srirangam-based Divya Desa Parambariya Padhukaappu Peravai, has cited the Home Secretary, the Tirunelveli district Superintendent of Police, the Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and an astrologer, Unnikrishna Panicker, among others, as respondents. According to the petitioner, the Lord Shiva shrine was removed from the 1,300-year-old Azhagiya Nambirayar Temple in June 2004 "under the pretext of renovation work." Work was on to construct a separate temple for the uprooted Siva Lingam, and it was against the Agama principles of the Vaishnavite temple, he said. The removal of the Lord Shiva shrine from the main temple was against the rules and regulations of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act as the Preservation of Properties Rules prohibits alteration or destruction of any antiques, objects of interest without any written permission of the HR&CE Department. The Department, on its part, did not act when all norms were flouted and completely ignored the protests of devotees and others, the petitioner said, adding that the police refused to receive complaints from the petitioner and failed to initiate any criminal action against the persons responsible for the removal. "Religious sentiments of thousands of devotees have been affected because of the high-handedness of the respondents," who, he said, were liable to be prosecuted in accordance with law.
