THANJAVUR: The stage is set for the zonal conference of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to be held here on April 16 and 17. Twice postponed, first in the wake of the December 26, 2004 tsunami and later due to rain, the event is eagerly awaited by party workers.
The venue at Vasthathchavadi on Nanjikottai road has a fort-like entrance, a pandal, which can accommodate 1.25 lakh people, and a marble-floored stage.
Guestrooms, protected drinking water supply and bathroom and toilet facilities have been arranged for the workers.
Huge cutouts have been put up and party flags flutter all over the town.
However, some of the arches and ornamentations on traffic islands pose problems to drivers, say people.
According to Ko. Si. Mani, district secretary, and S.S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, the conference will start at 9 a.m. with a music programme by Nagore Hanifa. Nirmala Suresh will hoist the flag.
Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, MLA, will declare open the conference and Durai Murugan, chairman of the conference, will speak.
Resolutions will be adopted. K. Anbazhagan, general secretary, will speak at the conclusion of the first day.
Speeches by allies
On April 17, leaders of the DMK's allies will address the conference and it will conclude with the speech of party president M. Karunanidhi.
M.K. Stalin, deputy general secretary, said resolutions on the performance of the State and Central Governments and specific to Thanjavur would be adopted.
