Experts to visit sugar factory

CUDDAPAH: Five experts of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories will visit the Cuddapah Cooperative Sugar factory at Chennur on April 25, the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Friday.

The experts would thoroughly examine the existing machinery, repairs required and new machinery to be purchased, he said.

They would submit a technical report after their five-day visit, he added.

Agriculture convention

CUDDAPAH: A four-day convention on agriculture will be conducted at the municipal stadium here from April 28 to May 1, the Collector said. Nearly one lakh farmers of the four districts of Rayalaseema were expected to participate, he said.

Oil tankers drivers' strike

ANANTAPUR: The strike by drivers of oil tankers at Guntakal on Friday hit supplies of the Indian Oil Corporation to three districts in Andhra Pradesh and two in Karnataka.

According to the information reaching here about 65 tankers were stranded at the IOC depot due to the strike.

Alleged harassment by the IOC officials was stated to be the reason behind the lightning strike.

The IOC depot at Guntakal serves Mahabubnagar, Kurnool and Anantapur districts in Andhra Pradesh and Bellary and Raichur districts in Karnataka.

Computer lab opened.

T IRUPATI: A computer laboratory in the MCA Department of Sri Venkateswara University was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor, S.Jayarama Reddy, on Friday.

He explained the benefits accrued to the MCA department after its de-linking from the Engineering College and addition to the newly-formed School of Information and Management Studies, to bring MBA and MCA under a single roof.

The Registrar J. Pratap Reddy, the Rector, N. Prabhakar Rao, the principal, J. Lakshman Rao, took part.

Food festival

TIRUPATI: Hotel Skybird, situated opposite TTD's Srinivasam complex, is holding a `Summer food festival' for six days from April 17.

All vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes will be served on a cost-to-cost basis at the festival, according to a release. Advance booking can be done over phone at 556 7557.

Two farmers end lives

Sangareddy: Unable to repay the loan taken from moneylenders for agricultural purposes, Avancha Mallesham (30) of Gudemgadda village of Narsapur mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

In Chegurthi village of Karimnagar district, a debt-ridden farmer, Gopaiah (40), committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Ryot dies in hospital

ADILABAD: Tandragolla Mallesh (35), a cotton farmer of Kajjerla village in Talamadugu mandal, died early on Friday while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital after he consumed poison on April 12. Mallesh had reportedly piled up debts to the tune of Rs. 1.25 lakhs to Andhra Bank and DCC Bank.

Couple stabbed to death

CUDDAPAH: An altercation between two water sellers led to the death of a couple in Ravindranagar in the town on Friday.

Shaik Mahabub Basha (35) and his wife, Shaik Jaibunnisa (28), who used to sell water in plastic pitchers, were stabbed to death allegedly by another water seller, Mohammed (28), following an altercation, the police said. The accused later surrendered before the police.

TRS activists injured

in scuffle

Sangareddy: Two Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) workers were injured in a scuffle at the Praja Patham programme organised at Rajampet on Friday in which the Sangareddy legislator and TRS leader, T. Jayaprakash Reddy, participated.

According to the Sangareddy police, Rasheed, a Telugu Desam activist and admirer of the legislator, wanted to felicitate the MLA at Rajampet.

Irked by the proposal, two TRS workers -- Majeeb Khan and Mukhtar -- succeeded in getting the programme cancelled.

After the MLA left for another village, Rasheed allegedly beat the duo.

Four suffer burns

CUDDAPAH: Two women and an equal number of girls suffered burns when a leaking pipe of an LPG cylinder caught fire in the BC Girls Hostel at Lakkireddipalle on Friday.

Subbamma, cook, and Ekambaramma, attender, and the students -- Bhagyalakshmi and Dilshad -- were injured. They were admitted to Cuddapah Government Hospital.

Women's Savings Day celebrations

HYDERABAD: The Small Savings Department mobilised net deposits of Rs. 4,811 crores as against Rs. 4,000 crores target fixed for the year 2004-05.

Addressing the Women's Savings Day celebrations on Friday, the Commissioner of Small Savings, D. Kailasa Prasad, said that all districts, except Nellore and East Godavari, achieved their targets.

Strike notice served

CUDDAPAH: The Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation Employees and Workers Union, affiliated to the CITU, served a notice to go on strike in the Mangampet Barytes Project, the CITU district secretary, C.H. Chandrasekhar, said on Friday.

Suspicious death

Rajahmundry: Gangidesi Anjanibai (60) died in a private hospital on Friday following the alleged use of expired drugs.

She was admitted to a private hospital on April 11.

Women farmers' protest

Patancheru: Hundreds of women farmers, as part of the `Global Week of action' organised by the Deccan Development Society on Friday, held a demonstration outside the International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat), asking the organisation to return the Gene Bank of local crops to farmers.
