NEW DELHI: The Government will take up the National Highway Development Project Phases V to VII envisaging the upgradation of 5000 km from four to six lane roads, the construction of 1,000 km of expressways connecting important commercial and industrial townships and providing ring roads for major cities. The three phases would be taken up on a BOT basis as decided by the Government which has taken fresh initiatives to focus on public-private partnership for faster development of the much-needed road infrastructure, the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and National Highway Road, T. R. Baalu, told media persons on Thursday. Though he did not indicate any timeframe, the Minister said that an Empowered Committee of Secretaries had been formed under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretaries to tackle the problems of delay in the acquisition of land, shifting of utilities and securing various permissions and clearances impeding the implementation of these projects. Under Phase V, the following works will be taken up: 5000 km of 4-lane to be transformed into 6-lane; high-density corridors to be covered; sections being identified Under Phase VI: 1000 km of National Expressways to link important commercial and industrial towns; Vadodra-Mumbai to be linked; tentatively includes 400 km Vadodra-Mumbai section; Ahmedabad-Vadodra Expressway ready; Sections to be identified. Under Phase VII: Ring Roads for important cities; construction of additional flyovers and bypasses.
