Temperature

MADURAI, APRIL 5. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 27.6 degree Celsius and a minimum of 23 degree Celsius. The Madurai Airport recorded 21.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m.

Accused nabbed

Thoorkarumbu alias Muniappan (43), a murder accused who escaped from police custody on Monday, was nabbed by the police at Pazhanganatham today.

The accused escaped when he was brought from the Cuddalore prison to a local court here.

Site inspected

The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, and the Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dhinakkaren, today inspected the site where Lord Kallazhagar will enter the Vaigai riverbed near the A.V. Bridge during the Chithirai festival.

Later, during his inspection in wards 11 and 14, the Mayor directed the officials to renovate the damaged roof of the Corporation school on Muthanandaswamy Street, raising the height of the compound wall of the school at Karumbalai and to install play equipment at the children's park at Krishnapuram Colony.

Residents of north zone handed over 95 petitions pertaining to improvement of civic facilities to the Mayor at the public grievance day meeting.

Programme

A long-felt need of doctors of southern districts has become a reality this year through `Positive,' an educational centre for postgraduate studies guidance programme for doctors aspiring for higher studies in medical education. The programme was inaugurated here on Sunday. In future, lectures will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays and second Saturdays till December, according to a release.
