CHENNAI, MARCH 13. Mediocrity has seeped into universities because of inadequate support for research and development, pro-Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Open University, S.C. Garg, said here today.
The bulk of Central funding goes to R and D in defence, atomic energy and space leading to a "sub-standard institutions" posing a serious threat to the quality of education and research. "It may be a tall expectation to expect quality education and research with low paid and under-qualified teachers," he said in his convocation address at the Easwari Engineering College.
"One viable option seems to be to open higher education to private enterprise."
