5 killed, 22 injured

VELLORE MARCH 13 . Five persons were killed and 22 injured when the tractor-trailer they were travelling in fell into a 30-foot-deep ravine at Aravatla, close to the Andhra Pradesh border, on Saturday night.

The police said the deceased and the injured were among the 45 relatives and friends of a bridegroom of Karkur colony near Pernambut who were returning after attending the betrothal at Nellipetla in Andhra Pradesh.

The accident occurred as the driver lost control of the vehicle as it neared a hairpin bend.

The Superintendent of Police, N. Rajasekaran, who visited the spot, said the tractor driver was under the influence of liquor. Venkatesan (45) and Panjalai (30), a couple from Ambur, and Vijayan (35), Radha (41) and Anbu (47) of Karkur colony died on the spot. The injured were admitted to the government hospitals at Pernambut and Gudiyatham and the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital at Adukkamparai.

Three die in van-lorry smash

TUTICORIN MARCH 13 . Three persons were killed and 10 injured when a van carrying a marriage party collided with a lorry here this evening.

The police said the victims were proceeding from Arumuganeri to Sattur, after attending a wedding when the mishap occurred. While Jeevanantham (52) and Anjali Raj (35) were killed on the spot, Ramachandran (30) died on admission to the government hospital here. The newly-wedded couple, Selvam (29) and Bharathi (23), were also injured.

7,750 kg of ration rice seized

TUTICORIN MARCH 13 . The Civil Supplies CID seized 7,750 kg of ration rice transported illegally to Kerala and arrested three persons at Kazhugamalai near here in the early hours today.

On a tip-off, a team intercepted a lorry carrying the rice in 155 bags at Kazhugamalai. The accused were remanded, official sources said.

Six held for selling drugs

NAGERCOIL MARCH 13. The police today arrested six persons on charges of selling sedative drugs.

A special team, formed to arrest those selling drug to college students, conducted surprise raids in different parts of the district and seized 1,600 doses of Bubri Norbin worth Rs.1 lakh, and arrested six persons, who allegedly sold the drug to students.

Album released

CHENNAI MARCH 13 . A music album by the ghatam exponent, T.H. Vinayakram, was released by M. Balamuralikrishna here today.

The first copy of "The Great Potter" was received by Richard D. Haynes, Consul-General, American Consulate here. Mr. Vinayakram said the album was the fruit of many years of toil. Mr. Krishna said ghatam was the creation of the five Elements.

Mr. Haynes said music was a blessing. The first music a child hears was the mother's heartbeat, like a drum beat. Ghatam, made of clay, was the simplest but the most wonderful of all instruments.

Actor S.Ve. Sekar said Mr. Vinayakram was instrumental in creating a worldwide demand for and liking to the instrument.

Promoted as Law Secretary

CHENNAI MARCH 13 . L. Jayasankaran, Additional Law Secretary, has been promoted and posted as the Law Secretary, in the place of A. Krishnan Kutty Nair, who has retired. Another Additional Law Secretary, T.M. Nandakumar, has been promoted to the grade of Secretary and posted as Law Officer of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, Chennai, says an official release.

Law forum branch in Chennai

CHENNAI MARCH 13 . The national branch of the International Law Association, headed by the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, has approved the creation of the regional branch in Chennai.

Headed by the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, who will be the ex-officio chairman, the Chennai centre will have Justice M. Karpagavinayagam as executive chairman, Justice P. Sathasivam as vice-chairman and advocate S. Prabakaran as the organising general secretary.
