Hectic day at the fair

NEW DELHI FEB. 28. It was a hectic day today at the 19th India Handicrafts and Gift Fair 2005 being held at Pragati Maidan here. Organised by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, the fair is an attempt to promote business across the world by re-working traditional designs to match international demands.

This time, there has been special emphasis at taking the Kashmiri craft to the global audience and increase its share from a negligible share of Rs. 20 crore at present to a ten-fold rise of Rs. 200 crores in the coming five years. There is also an attempt to attract the attention of buyers towards the magnificent art of North Eastern India by re-designing them to international tastes.

Training programme launched

NEW DELHI FEB. 28. A week-long training programme on textbook publishing was inaugurated at the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) premises on Aurobindo Marg here today.

Organised by the Central Institute of Education Technology and Publication Department of NCERT, the training aims at improving the capacity of States in the field of publishing textbooks and utilising the latest technology.

During the training programme, various aspects from editorial to publication of quality textbooks would be discussed. Eminent speakers from reputed private publishers, NCERT academic staff and professionals from editorial, production and marketing team of various publication departments have been invited to participate.

The Director of NCERT, Krishna Kumar, said that States have greater responsibility towards education as they worked directly with the school children and teachers.

Shiv Jayanti Shanti Utsav

NEW DELHI FEB. 28. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, has said that neither money nor strenuous efforts would enable us to achieve peace and harmony in society for which spirituality was essential.

This was stated by Ms. Dikshit at the "Shiv Jayanti Shanti Utsav" at Utsav Ground here on Sunday. "Efforts for developing mutual understanding, respect, cooperation, peace and amity among people called for spiritual endeavour," she added.

The Additional Chief of Brahma Kumaris, Rajyogini Dadi Janki, said that the Utsav was meant to promote human values like truth, purity, peace, love and happiness through spiritual empowerment.

A noble gesture by students

NEW DELHI FEB. 28. The students and staff of Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, have collected Rs.1,56,461 for relief and rehabilitation of tsunami victims.

The cheque was handed over to the Union Minister of State for Home, Prakash Jaiswal, by the Principal of Ahlcon International School, Ashok K. Pandey.

The students not only contributed to the fund but also collected money for the noble cause from people living in neighbouring housing societies.
