NEW DELHI, FEB. 23. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, today lauded the role played by the media in bringing the work of Parliament to the people, but added that the press should give adequate space to debates on substantive issues. He was speaking at a seminar on "Press, Parliament and the People," organised by the Delhi Union of Journalists and the Appan Menon Memorial Trust at the Constitution Club here. Live telecast of Parliamentary proceedings had started from the previous session. A proposal to open the meetings of the Parliamentary Committees was also under consideration.
New wage board
The Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, S. Jaipal Reddy, said the quality of substantive reporting and in-depth analysis in the media had deteriorated. The media should correct this through self-regulation. He also spoke about the constitution of a new wage board for journalists and a media commission to look into issues related to the media. A resolution demanding the announcement of a media commission and a new wage board in the current session of Parliament was adopted. Another resolution condemning the suppression of freedom of the press in Nepal was passed. It called upon like-minded organisations to join the DUJ in restoration of democracy in Nepal.
