Chief Minister lacks faith in democracy: Vasan

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB. 16. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, has ridiculed the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's demand for doing away with electronic voting machines (EVM) and reverting to the ballot paper system in general elections.

In a statement here today, Mr. Vasan said the Chief Minister who doubted the credibility of the voting machines had forgotten that she had won the last Assembly election only through the EVMs. Ms. Jayalalithaa's demand only showed her lack of faith in democracy and her selfish attitude. She should gracefully accept the people's verdict.

Mr. Vasan said the State Government's refusal to hand over the list of tsunami-affected fishermen to banks for getting loan with subsidy created confusion. As the State had a duty to facilitate early disbursement of loans, he expressed the hope that the State would soon hand over the list to the banks.

On the Cauvery issue, he said Central Ministers belonging to Tamil Nadu never hesitated to fight for the State's rights. They were anxious to implement welfare schemes but it was the Government that was not cooperating, Mr. Vasan said.
