Allapuram, Thorappadi plea on water

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, FEB.13. The authorities of the Allapuram and Thorappadi special village panchayats have urged the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and the District Collector, S.Gopalakrishnan, to divert sufficient water from the Ponnai scheme to the above two special village panchayats to enable the local bodies to overcome the acute drinking scarcity.

The executive officer of the Allapuram special village panchayat has urged the Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineer of the TWAD Board here to divert water to the Allapuram panchayat from the Ponnai scheme — a combined drinking water scheme-- which is supplying water to the Vellore and Sathuvachari Municipalities and 12 wayside habitations by drawing water from the confluence of the Ponnai and Palar rivers.

In a separate memorandum recently handed over to the Collector, M.Arumugam, president of the Thorappadi Special Village Panchayat said that the Thorappadi panchayat has been supplying drinking water to the people through the Allapuram-Thorappadi Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, under which water was drawn from the headworks located on the Palar river in Keezhmonavoor village near here for the last two years. While the Allapuram special village panchayat got 73 per cent of the water share, the Thorappadi special village panchayat got 27 per cent share. But for the last two months, the Thorappadi panchayat was able to supply water to an area only once a month in view of the depleting water table in the Palar.

The Thorappadi special panchayat president therefore requested the Collector to use his good offices with the TWAD Board (which is currently operating the scheme) and ensure the diversion of two lakh litres of water daily to the Thorappadi panchayat from the Ponnai scheme.
