CHENNAI, FEB. 7. Women selling fish at the Besant Nagar fish market were a happy lot today: they received a set of vessels, a weighing balance and a 50-litre ice box, from the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP), an inter-government organisation.

M. Anjalai, president, Oorur Olcott Kuppam Meenavar Magalir Munnetra Mandram, one of the beneficiaries, said that after the tsunami they did not open the shop and found it difficult to feed the family.

So they approached the BOBP, which provided materials worth Rs. 3,200 to each member of the Mandram.

The women plan to visit the fish markets in Chintadripet and Royapuram area to buy fish. Most of their customers preferred the fresh catch and the fishermen in Besant Nagar area had not ventured into the sea after the tsunami, she said.

Kalaiselvi, another member of the Mandram, said: "We want to be on our own and buy fish from the wholesale market. We need some initial help. We approached BOBP because they helped us with a fish market many years ago."

In 1987, BOBP conducted technical trials of its beach landing craft at Oorur and Olcott Kuppam. Fisher-folk of the two hamlets took part in the trial and sought the BOBP's advice in solving their problems. A women's group was set up later with women who wanted a fish market of their own, said Yugaraj S. Yadava, Director, BOBP.
