Land reform tribunals to be reconstituted

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, FEB. 4. The Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, told the Legislative Council today that the Government will reconstitute all the land tribunals in the State after one month.

Replying to V.S. Ugrappa (Congress) during question hour, Mr. Prakash said 36,917 cases are under process and the extent of land involved in the land reforms process is 13,43,718.32 acres.

Mr. Ugrappa, Nafees Fazal (Congress) and others asked the Minister to state whether the members of the House have a role to play on a par with their counterparts in the Lower House in official bodies such as land tribunals.

As land tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies, no member of the Upper House or Lower House can become the chairperson of a tribunal, but there is no bar on their becoming members, Mr. Prakash clarified.

Even as the discussion on the role the MLCs have to play and the position they are eligible to hold in local bodies was on, M.P. Nadagouda (Janata Dal-U) intervened to point out that many members of land tribunals have no moral right to continue as they have been defeated in the Assembly elections. The new government should have revamped the tribunals. That compelled Mr. Prakash to state that the Government will reconstitute the tribunals.

Tahsildars' appointment

On the need for appointing 107 tahsildars through direct recruitment, Mr. Prakash told Vimala Gowda (Bharatiya Janata Party) that the Government is constrained to do so in the interests of administration. He clarified that the Government does not intend to disregard or belittle the KPSC.
