`Govt. sabotaging Tumkur varsity'

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, JAN. 30. The office-bearers of Tumkur University Protection Committee have accused the Government of pursuing a hidden agenda and systematically trying to sabotage the growth of the university.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, C.N. Narasimha Murthy, president of the committee, G.M. Srinivasaiah, secretary, S.G .Siddaramaiah, B.S. Lingaraju, and G.S. Somanna, executive committee members, said they have been disillusioned over the way the Government has been administering the Tumkur University during the past nine months.

No appointments

Mr. Srinivasaiah said the committee wanted Tumkur University to be established as a model university. But, the Government has made it "notorious model" by running it without a Vice-Chancellor and a Registrar for nearly a year. Neither a syndicate nor a Board of Studies has been formed.

He said that Mallikarjuna B. Dyaberi, Deputy Commissioner of Tumkur district, who has been given additional charge as the varsity's special officer, has no time for the job.

Mr. Srinivasaiah criticised the Government for postponing the varsity's inaugural function on more than two occasions.

Mr. Murthy said the committee lead a delegation to the two Ministers from the district — C. Channigappa, Minister for Sericulture and Tumkur district in-charge, and B. Satyanarayana, Minister of State for Rural Water Supply — on January 27.

Examinations

Mr. Murthy said 69 colleges are affiliated to Tumkur University. Since the university is not equipped to conduct examinations, the students are forced to take annual system, as against the semester system being introduced in Bangalore University. "Students are facing a dilemma — of studying the books of the semester system and writing their examinations in annual system."

Mr. Siddaramaiah said fifty post-graduates from the district who have been preparing for doctoral degree have been asked by Bangalore University to shift their registration to Tumkur University, where there are no facilities for the Ph.D. course. Nearly 100 other post-graduates are waiting to register for M.Phil course. All of them will stand to lose a year or two, he said.

Recruitment

Mr. Somanna said the Government has ignored a plea by local people that all appointments must be done on a fool-proof basis and that priority must be given to local candidates. Many have been posted on deputation from other universities.

He said the university's special officer is empowered to recruit people for over 150 posts. But, Mr. Dyaberi has not taken any steps to fill the posts. Mr. Somanna alleged that sportspersons of Tumkur University are not paid funds to take part in national events.
