Brave children felicitated

NEW DELHI JAN. 22. The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg branch of the Canara Bank today felicitated 19 children who have been selected for the National Bravery Award for 2004 on the occasion of Republic Day.

The Chairperson of the Indian Council for Child Welfare, Geeta Siddhartha, distributed prizes and certificates to the children and appreciated their valour in saving human lives. She lauded the Canara Bank for felicitating the children.

The General Manager of the bank, Prakash Mallaya, said the Canara Bank was organising such a function for the 18th year now. The bank, he added, would extend educational loans to these brave children and asked them to avail of this facility.

Relief team in Andamans

NEW DELHI JAN. 22. A relief team of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha (AMPS) -- a global voluntary spiritual organisation -- is rendering help in a big way to the tsunami victims in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, according to an AMPS release here.

It said the relief team comprising 28 monks and 50 volunteers has been doing different types of work. While in Hard Bay the volunteers are involved in sanitation work and offering counselling to the affected people, in Port Blair they are providing shelter to the people who have come from small islands. They are also providing food, medical health and other essential items.

Garment expo opened

NEW DELHI JAN. 22. About 900 Indian and foreign companies and brands are participating in the four-day exposition titled Garment Technology Expo (International) 2005 that was inaugurated at the NSIC Centre here on Friday.

Some of the products on display include cutting and sewing machines, steam finishing, fusing, laundry, embroidery, CAD/CAM systems, software solutions, trimmings and allied services.

"The Indian garment exporters, though generally equipped to face new challenges born out of demise of quota regime, have to catch up with other competing economies not only by upgrading their technology but also by expanding their production at reduced costs," said the Director of Garment Technology Expo, Ricky Sahni.

Community centres inaugurated

NEW DELHI JAN. 22. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today said that in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games 2010, the Capital, especially East Delhi, would witness tremendous infrastructure development.

Speaking after inaugurating two community centres at Ghazipur and Karkardooma today, Ms. Dikshit said construction of the Games Villages in the trans-Yamuna area would not only result in all round development but would also bring the civic services and infrastructure at par with the most developed colonies of the Capital.

She informed that of the 32 community centres planned across East Delhi, 23 have now become operational for use. These community centres could also house libraries for which books could be purchased from the Member of Parliament's funds, she added.

Students collect relief

NEW DELHI JAN. 22. Extending help to the tsunami victims, the students, staff and teachers and the management of Springdales and Goodley public schools collected necessary articles and money to be used for their welfare.

The students of Springdales students contributed rice, flour, pulses, clothes, medicines, books and even toys for the tsunami victims. Two trucks loaded with these articles were flagged off for Tamil Nadu Bhawan on January 14. For their part, the school staff of the Dhaula Kuan, Kirti Nagar and Pusa Road branches of the school contributed their one-day salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. A cheque for Rs. 6.93 lakhs was handed over to the Prime Minister at his residence on January 21.
