Polytechnic student ends life

KHAMMAM: A polytechnic student, Pati Bhanu Prakash, committed suicide by hanging in the house in which he had been staying with a few other students in Kothagudem on Friday.

Prakash had been reportedly in a state of depression after he was reportedly pulled up by his family members for not doing well in studies. His father had visited him only on Thursday.

A victim of eve teasing

NELLORE: An Intermediate student, P. Sujatha (17), committed suicide on Friday by consuming pesticide reportedly unable to bear eve teasing, in Chejerla mandal in the district.

According to the police, an auto driver, Sk. Khader Mastan of Toorpukambhampadu village, had been allegedly teasing her for quite some time. He allegedly addressed a letter to her recently following which he was reprimanded by the girl's parents and relatives.

Last evening, when the girl was returning from college, the accused, along with two others, allegedly blocked the girl's way and sought to take her photograph. When Sujatha cried for help, the accused took to his heels. On retuning home, Sujatha reportedly consumed pesticide and died on way to hospital on Friday. The police nabbed the accused and are investigating.

Transco moves to redress grievances

HYERABAD: The APTransco and discoms have created special cells at consumer care centres/sub-divisional centres for speedy redressal of grievances being aired during the `Rajiv nagara baata' programme.

This was stated by Rachel Chatterjee, Chairperson and Managing Director, APTransco, while reviewing the consumer service initiatives with CMDs of discoms and senior officials here on Friday.

She said that complaints received during the programme were being recorded, documented and consumers given acknowledgements. Divisional engineers, assistant divisional engineers and assistant engineers were asked to redress the grievances in a time-bound programme.

Ramasubba Reddy hospitalised

HYDERABAD: The former Minister and Telugu Desam leader, Ramasubba Reddy, who was recently lodged in Cherlapally jail following conviction in a murder case, was shifted to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday night as he complained of chest pain.

The Jail Superintendent, M. Chandrashekhar, said that Mr. Reddy had a history of chest-related problems and was earlier treated at the NIMS.

Ajit Singh calls on Naidu

HYDERABAD: The former Union Minister, Ajit Singh, called on the Telugu Desam president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at the NTR Trust Bhavan on Friday. Mr. Singh was with Mr. Naidu for 10 minutes and a party spokesman described it as a courtesy call.

World Social Forum meet

HYDERABAD: Twenty-one delegates representing the city-based National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights will attend the World Social Forum being held in Porto Alegre (Brazil) from January 26 to 31. The delegation, led by Paul Divakar, national convener, will seek support for the struggles launched by Dalits in the country. The forum will discuss issues of globalisation, religious fundamentalism and racial discrimination.

CPI(M) leader hacked to death

KHAMMAM: A CPI(M) leader was reportedly hacked to death near Bethalapadu village in

Julurpadu police station limits on Friday. According to the police, R. Nageswara Rao (40) was attacked and killed when he was on his way to a neighbouring village.

Mango trees felled

KURNOOL: Unidentified persons felled 132 mango trees belonging to seven Scheduled Caste farmers at Pandillapalli village in Krishnagiri mandal of Kurnool district on Friday. According to reports, out of 60 SC families in the village, 54 families had not been supporting a local Congress leader, which was believed to have provoked him.

The plantations were taken up four years ago under a Government sponsored scheme. A case was registered against eight persons in this regard.

Court fiat to Assembly Secretary

HYDERABAD: The Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, has been directed to conduct an inquiry into the allegations that the MLA of Kaikaluru, Rajaramachander alias Rajababu, has produced fake medical bills to get reimbursement.

These directions were issued by a Division Bench, comprising the Chief Justice Devinder Gupta, and Justice M. Narayana Reddy, while dealing with a writ petition filed by Suryachander Rao, a leader from Krishna district.

The petitioner informed the court that the bills produced by the MLA were declared not genuine by the hospital concerned. The Secretary was asked to submit a report in four weeks.

Congress organisational posts

Hyderabad: The district returning officers' meeting of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) held here on Friday decided to earmark 33 per cent of organisational posts to women and 20 per cent to Backward Classes.

The three-tier elections to the party's primary committees, booth committees and DCCs will be completed by March 14 and the PCC president's election - a mere formality here as K. Keshava Rao had already been appointed - will be completed by April 30.

Addressing a press conference, the PCC chief, Dr. Keshava Rao, urged leaders to maintain strict confidentiality of the process.

Forest officers' recruitment

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) will hold recruitment test for Forest Range Officers on February 27 and 28.

Sources in the Commission said that there has been no recruitment of FROs for the last one decade. Rampant felling of trees due to shortage of Forest Officers has forced the Forest Department to request the Government to conduct a recruitment test.

The Principal Secretary (Forests) has recently written to the General Administration Department to give clearance for recruitment of 170 FROs. However, the Government has approved 50 posts.

The Commission is also gearing up to conduct recruitment test for 160 vacant posts of Non-Gazetted Officers in various departments.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Except for very light rain in Kakinada, weather was dry in the State on Friday. Minimum temperatures rose at one or two places in Telangana and they changed little in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

The lowest night temperature of 14 degree Celsius was recorded in Nizamabad and Ramagundam.

Weather will continue to be dry in the State on Saturday.

Rail roko by Congressmen

MAHABUBNAGAR: Congress activists led by the Municipal Chairman, S. Prakash, staged a rail roko here on Friday demanding opening of railway gate near agricultural market yard on the town outskirts.

Over 200 Congress activists detained Hyderabad-bound Tungabhadra Express for sometime. The gate was closed over four years ago following construction of a road overbridge, near the Collector's camp office, to facilitate commuters to cross the railway track.

Teachers to picket Secretariat

ADILABAD: Various teachers' unions and associations under the aegis of Upadhyaya Sanghala Porata Samithi will picket Secretariat in Hyderabad on February 7.

The decision to stage the protest involving 50,000 teachers was taken at a meeting of representatives of the unions in Hyderabad on Friday.

The State Teachers Union district president, K. Bheem Rao, and the secretary, S. Mukund Rao, told reporters here that their demands were announcement of a pay revision committee and common service rules and postings to 17,000 selected candidates in DSC 2003.

Mammoth plantation drive

NIZAMABAD: Plans are being made to plant over 15 lakh saplings in a single day in the district.

At a meeting here on Friday, the district Collector, D.V. Raidu, asked the Forest Department to gear up for the gigantic task.

Plants like pongamia and zetropha would be planted on the premises of Government offices, corporations, temples and in waste lands. Farmers would be urged to take up subabul plantations, the Collector said.

Integration camp

KARIMNAGAR: The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Kakatiya University is organising a national integration camp at Satavahana University PG College here from January 23 to 29.

Speaking to newsmen here on Friday, the NSS coordinator, G. Benerjee, said 300 NSS volunteers from 20 universities of the country would participate.

During the camp volunteers would undertake shramdan in villages and organise lectures by eminent personalities.

Farm labourers killed in mishap

Sangareddy: Two farm labourers were killed in an accident near Bonala crossroads in Chegunta mandal of Medak district on Friday. The mishap occurred when the tractor trailor on which they were travelling overturned.

Ellaiah (55), a resident of Dongala Dharmaram, and Pochavva (38) of Makkarajpet died while eight others were injured.

Jana Reddy for Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD: The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, will participate in a couple of official and non-official meetings here on Saturday.

He will review law and order situation with police officers and later leave for Nirmal in Adilabad district, according to the Superintendent of Police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy.

Minister for Nellore today

NELLORE: The Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, will arrive at Nellore on Saturday on a one-day visit to the district. After having a discussion with officials about the relief and rehabilitation measures for tsunami victims, he will visit the affected areas, before leaving for Ongole in the night.

The Minister for Social Welfare, Redya Naik, will arrive here on Monday and will review the department activities with the district administration and leave for Hyderabad the same day.

NELLORE: The teachers in Bheemavarappadu and Saipet panchayats of Kondapuram mandal have donated Rs. 11,055 towards relief for tsunami-affected. `Narendrabharati' high school students of Kavali have contributed Rs. 3,020. Other contributions include Rs. 2,000 from the Bapatist Church of Atmakur, Rs. 750 from the villagers of Ramanaidupalli of Marripadu mandal and Rs. 19,980 by the DSC qualified candidates. The Fishermen's Welfare Samiti has distributed rice, clothes and other essential commodities to the Venkannapalem fishermen of TP Gudur mandal.

Seminar

NELLORE: A seminar on `Relations between doctors and patients' will be held at the meeting hall of the People's Polyclinic, Nellore, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Organised by `People for India', the seminar will discuss the situation arising out the recent attempts in various parts of State to ransack nursing homes for various reasons.

Review meeting

MADANAPALLE: The Government Chief Whip, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, has asked sarpanches and mandal officials to visit villages at least once in two days. He was speaking at a review meeting with officials on drinking water position on Thursday. The Chittoor Collector, S.S. Rawat, asked the officials concerned to transport water, as sources were not available in villages. Mr. Reddy reviewed the water condition in Valmikipuram, Kalikiri, Kalakada, G. Konda and K.V. Palle mandals.

Birth anniversary

NELLORE: The 109th birth anniversary celebrations of 'Kavikokila' Duvvuri Rami Reddy will be held at the Town Hall, on Saturday. K. Girijalakshmi, Reader in Telugu, Veda Samskruta Kalasala, Nellore, will deliver a lecture on the 'literary style of Kavikokila' and will be felicitated.

Youth festival

NELLORE: A `'Simhapuri Youth Festival' is to be held at Nellore town on Sunday, under the auspices of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). There will be a number of cultural programmes on this occasion.

Drama contest

NELLORE: A three-day national-level drama competition will be held at Kavali from January 25. More than 10 dramas are likely to be staged during the period, at the coronation reading room.
