Power generation at Srisailam stopped
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD,
JAN. 21.
Power generation was stopped at Srisailam on Friday.
When generation was halted, the storage in the reservoir fell to 850 ft, four ft less than 854-ft mark insisted by the Government earlier for facilitating proper supply to Rayalaseema region.
This development will subject the grid to a heavy strain, especially during peak hours. With no water being released from Srisailam, the output at Nagarjunasagar is also affected. The storage in this reservoir fell to 512 ft.
The Government has ordered for the stoppage of Srisailam hydel stations with a view to preserving water for rabi and for power generation in summer when the State is likely to face power shortage. Since 800 ft is the minimum level required in Srisailam for power generation, APTransco can still get nearly 120 million units out of the storage presently available.
Meanwhile, the power demand in the State has gone up due to the onset of rabi. It touched 144 mu on Thursday but APTransco could supply only 140 mu.
This meant a staggered load shutdown in the rural areas to the tune of 4 mu.
