NAGERCOIL, JAN.17. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the State Government to put up groins in coastal areas of the district to minimise damage caused by the tsunami disaster.
Speaking to The Hindu , the Lok Sabha member, A.V.Bellarmin, CPI-(M), said the Government should construct fishing harbours at Thengapattinam, Colachel and Muttom and upgrade the Colachel port into a mother container port.
The Government should also distribute rice, cereals and other essential commodities through fair price shops to tsunami-affected fishermen in the district till they ventured into the sea for fishing.
Rice, kerosene and other commodities should be provided to inland fishermen, Muslims, Arayars and others depending on fish for their livelihood. Moreover 1000 coral and shell vendors were put to untold hardship after the killer waves hit the coasts of Kanyakumari.
The Government should install adequate signals cautioning natural calamities so that the precious lives of fishermen community could be saved, said Mr. Bellarmine.
