NEW DELHI, JAN. 10. The Prime Minister's Office disclosed this evening that Manmohan Singh on January 6 wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa that the Centre had information that the State Government was planning to arrest the junior Sankaracharya. The Prime Minister further expressed the apprehension that if the State Government went ahead with its plan, the absence of both the Acharyas would mean a disruption of the daily puja, and that would hurt the sentiments of devotees. Dr. Singh pointed out that while the law must take its course, the State Government should also take this aspect into consideration. On January 7, when Dr. Singh was in Chennai he reiterated his apprehension to Ms. Jayalalithaa. She assured him that all precautions had been taken and all aspects had been considered.
