CHENNAI, JAN. 10. Mediumpacer Hardevinder Singh took his second five-wicket haul in the Cooch Behar Trophy inter-state under-19 tournament, as Punjab gained first innings honours over Tamil Nadu on the second day of their three-day Plate semifinal at the Chidambaram Stadium here on Monday.

The visitor took the overall lead to 126, as it was 48 without loss in its second innings at stumps after openers Sunny Sohal (30) and Ravinder Singh (18) gained a reprieve each.

Chasing 250 for the lead, the host lost two wickets in its very first over to Hardevinder and did not quite recover thereafter. The Punjab lad bowled 13 overs in three spells.

Tamil Nadu lost half its side for 45 and was soon seven down for 73, before No. 7 batsman R. Ashwin turned in a gritty 78 (154m, 128b, 13x4), and put on 40 for the ninth wicket with Guru Kedarnath (14) and 31 with T. Suresh Kumar (one not out) for the last wicket.

Left-arm seamer Amrinder Singh took two wickets and left-arm spinner Sumit Kalia, three.

Meanwhile at Visakhapatnam, Amol Shinde (60 batting, 4x5) and R.A. Viswanath (30, 4x3) extricated Hyderabad out of deep trouble with a 61-run stand for the sixth wicket in the Cooch-Behar Trophy plate semifinal against Andhra.

Hyderabad was 178 for five at close on the second day in reply to Andhra's first innings total of 270. Earlier, Andhra resuming at 221 for eight, was well served by the overnight batsman, Sk. Naushad (62, 6x1, 4x8). Left-arm spinner, Pragyan Ojha was well rewarded for his efforts with a five-wicket haul while medium pacer Alfred Absolom picked up three wickets.

A.G. Pradeep and G.V.S. Prasad picked up two wickets each to push Hyderabad into trouble but the visitors rallied through Shinde and Viswanath after opener D.B. Raviteja (34, 4x3) stayed put to keep the scoreboard moving.

The scores: At Chennai: Punjab 249 in 110.1 overs (Sumit Sharma 42, Rupinder Singh 40, Sumit Kalia 59, R. Naresh six for 50) & 48 for no loss in 15 overs v Tamil Nadu 171 in 49.5 overs (R. Ashwin 78, Hardevinder Singh five for 56).
