Jesuraj & Vidyut help Tamil Nadu take lead

By Our Special Correspondent

Lone Crusader: Dhiraj Jadhav's gallant effort could not stop Tamil Nadu from taking lead.

CHENNAI, JAN. 1. The pace-spin combination of R. Jesuraj and Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan provided Tamil Nadu a lead of 102 runs over Maharashtra on the second day of the Elite `B' Ranji Trophy duel at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Maharashtra, despite a well-made 74 from opener Dhiraj Jadhav, was bowled out for 175. The wiry Jesuraj of waspish pace achieved two-way movement, while left-armer Vidyut rightly allowed the ball to hang in the air. Both scalped four batsmen each.

The conditions for batting eased on Saturday with some portions of the grass undistinguishable from the brown surface but the home bowlers hit the right areas to extract the most.

Save Jadhav, the Maharashtra batsmen were found lacking in temperament. A glaring example was when a well-set Dhruv Mohan, who had added 87 with Jadhav for the fourth wicket, suffered a rush a blood against Vidyut.

Jadhav (177b, 8x4) is not a left-handed stylist, but there is an unmistakable flow to his batting. He has a high back-lift, but the bat comes down straight rather than travel across. After a tentative initial phase, he revealed sound judgment outside the off-stump, displayed a tight front-foot defence, and drove firmly between mid-off and cover point.

His was a solid presence at the crease, till he attempted to pull-sweep left-arm spinner R. Ramkumar soon after tea; the resultant top-edge proved fatal.

Good commitment

Probably stung by the nightmare at Vadodara, Tamil Nadu displayed good commitment on the field; S. Sharath reacted swiftly at gully when Maharashtra captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar slashed at M.R. Shrinivas — it was a crucial early strike for the host.

Maharashtra debutant paceman Ajay Chavan added two more wickets to finish with four for 36 as Tamil Nadu was dismissed for 277.
