Channel wars

Sir, — Television channels with political affiliations are engaged in a war of sorts in Tamil Nadu. It is one thing to point out shortcomings but quite another to exploit the tragedy to score political points. The media should make better use of their reach.

Sir, — I was in Boston at the time of the Al-Qaeda attack in the U.S. The crisis management was excellent with the people, the media and the Opposition forgetting their differences and fully supporting the Government's relief and rehabilitation efforts. The media and the Opposition did not harp on the shortcomings of the Government, as they feared this would adversely affect the crisis management. Back home, it is a pity that politicians are trying to get maximum mileage from the tragedy.

Sir, — The squabbling among politicians is unfortunate. This is the time to close ranks and work together. When 9/11 happened, the entire political spectrum in the U.S. stood together.

Sir, — The blame game being played by the TV channels is not in good taste. It is useful to report the shortcomings in relief operations but to find fault with virtually everything is unfair. The purpose of the fourth estate will be defeated if such unhealthy competition persists.

Sir, — It is disheartening to see private television channels giving gala advertisements about their proposed New Year-eve programmes. When the tsunami has claimed so many lives across the world, these channels should stop thinking of their commercial interests — at least for a while.

B.K. Ravishankar,
Ambur, T.N.
