NEW DELHI, DEC. 29. The Union Cabinet has decided to extend by a month the term of the Nanavati Commission which has been investigating the 1984 riots in Delhi following the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Announcing this, the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said the Commission's term was to expire on December 31. Noting that the Commission, which was set up on October 3, 2000, had almost completed its job, he said it was in the process of writing its report. The Commission was set up by the National Democratic Alliance Government to enquire into allegations that several politicians and policemen were also involved in inciting the riots and in supporting violence which led to the massacre of thousands of Sikhs across the country. Though initially the panel had been given extension up to April 2, 2002, to complete the enquiry and submit its report to the Government, it had sought a further extension of six months to complete the job and it was this period which was due to lapse on December 31, 2004. The Commission, as per an official spokesperson, would bring out the sequence of events leading to and the facts relating to the large-scale violence and anti-Sikh riots. The enquiry, the official said, was thus aimed at infusing a sense of security and confidence in the public in general and the Sikh community in particular.
