KOLKATA/AGARTALA, DEC. 25 . A doyen of the Communist movement in India and former Tripura Chief Minister, Nripen Chakraborty, passed away at the SSKM hospital in Kolkata early today after a protracted illness. He was 99. Official sources said the Marxist leader died following a massive cardiac arrest. The body of the nonagenarian Communist leader is being brought to Agartala for cremation tomorrow. The two-time Chief Minister of Tripura (1978 to 1988) had been ailing for sometime. Following the deterioration of his health on December 19, he was admitted to the GB hospital in Agartala and later on December 23 shifted to the SSKM Hospital, where the end came at 4. 20 a.m. The body will be kept at the Mela Math (ground) in Agartala for people to pay their last respects before the last rites will be performed at the Battala mass cremation ground with full state honours. A bachelor, Mr. Chakraborty has left behind numerous admirers from all walks of life across the country. A pall of gloom descended on Tripura as news of Mr. Chakraborty's death spread. The Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, his ministerial colleagues and senior CPI (M) leaders held an emergency meeting in Agartala. The Left Front Government has also declared a government holiday on Monday besides three days' mourning in the State. During this period the national flag will also fly at half-mast. The State Government has cancelled all its programmes scheduled to be held during the next two-three days.
