Award Bharat Ratna to Rao: Swamy
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
DEC. 24.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, says that the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, should be given the Bharat Ratna award posthumously.
Dr. Swamy said: "It is a shame on the nation that Mr. Rao, who is unanimously acknowledged as the `father of Indian economic reforms,' could not receive the award while he was alive," a party release said here today.
Dr. Swamy was appointed Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards, with Cabinet rank, by Rao and had been his long-standing friend till the end, the release said.
