Research scientist dead
NEW DELHI,
DEC. 22.
Avtar Singh Paintal, an exponent in the field of physiological research and a Padma Vibhushan recipient, passed away here on Tuesday.
He was 79.
Mr. Paintal, who was a former Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, was the first research scientist to be awarded the London-based prestigious Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), a Delhi University press communiqué said.
A former president of the Indian National Science Congress, he won international acclaim with the discovery of the "J-Receptor" in the lung, which bears great significance in the detection of heart and lung diseases, it added.
