Three more records fall

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 21. The old order made way for the new in three events on the penultimate day of the ONGC-junior National athletics championships at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation stadium on Tuesday.

Two of them were in the boys' and girls' under-18 triple jump. Malkit Singh stretched M. Renjith's mark of 15.04 m by 0.03 cm at the hop, step and jump pit, where most of the jumpers barely made it to the sand. Tamil Nadu's P. Vinod Raj, who finished runner-up, was more than a foot behind.

On the distaff side, Tincy Mathews recorded a 27-cm increase over K.N. Priya's mark of 12.37, set at Bangalore in 2001. Alka Chikili finished second.

The third landmark also went Kerala's way, K.P. Bimin vaulting over the bar at 4.75 metres, a 15 cm rise over Devanand of Delhi, who set the mark at Kollam, last year.

The reigning champion stamped its seal of superiority on the day, clinching as many as seven gold medals, that amounted to more than a fourth of the precious metal on offer. With the last day to go, Kerala had 19 golds, 18 silvers, 12 bronzes, followed by Haryana (8-6-7) and Tamil Nadu (7-8-8).

K. Bhaskar of Andhra Pradesh was suspended for six months, while Praveen Anand and Senthilvel of Tamil Nadu were banned for two years, all of them for being overaged.
