High drama before Appu's arrest

By A. Devarajan

TIRUPATI. Dec 20. A day after Appu's arrest from his 50-acre farmhouse in his native Balakrishnapuram village, 50 km from here on the Andhra Pradesh-Tamilnadu border, information is trickling in about the high-drama that preceded his arrest, which till the last-minute, was kept under wraps by the Tamil Nadu police.

Reports quoting the villagers say that the Tamil Nadu police team had frequented Appu's estate in the village at least half a dozen times in the last 10 days following "feelers" reportedly sent by him that he was ready to surrender if the police promised that he would not be killed in an "encounter." Reports further said that it was Appu's brother-in-law, Chengalraya Reddy, who actually acted as the mediator in the "surrender" episode.

Flurry of activity

Villagers said there was a flurry of activity at Appu's farmhouse right from 3.15 p.m. on Sunday with vehicles whizzing in and out of the village, their glasses raised or curtains drawn. It is said that before Appu was taken away from the farmhouse in a van reportedly with a blank number plate, the Tamil Nadu police team led by K. Premkumar were closeted with him for 30 minutes. Reports quoting Appu's sister Padmamma said that it was his family members who actually handed him over to the police.

Denies role

In a brief chat with a Telugu TV channel before boarding the waiting police vehicle, Appu stoutly denied any hand in the Sankararaman's murder. When I am already well off and paying a huge income-tax on my business earnings, where is the need for me to stoop to the level becoming a "killer" for the sake of a few lakhs? I am being framed. I tried for bail but as it was not forthcoming, I have surrendered to prove my innocence in the court, he said.
