Iraq may press Pakistan for troops

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 19. The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hushiyar Zaibari, arrived here today on a three-day visit to discuss bilateral and regional matters.

A statement by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said he would discuss with the Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, the security situation, elections and Pakistan's role in Iraq's reconstruction.

Mr. Zebari also will meet the President, Pervez Musharraf, and the Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz. A Foreign Office spokesman said Pakistan continues to watch the situation in Iraq and hoped the visit would strengthen the ties between the two brotherly countries.

Difficult time

He said as Iraq was passing through a difficult time Pakistan wished peace and stability there. Asked whether Pakistan was ready to send its troops there, the spokesman said that keeping in view the volatile situation, Pakistan has declined such requests.

Mr. Zebari, who is the first Foreign Minister of the interim Iraqi Government to visit Pakistan, is expected to renew the request made by the interim government for help in stabilising the situation.

Since the American invasion, Pakistan has faced pressures from the U.S. and its allies to consider sending its troops to Iraq. Initially, Gen. Musharraf said Pakistan had agreed in `principle' to send troops. As opposition to the invasion grew, Islamabad distanced itself from the U.S.-led coalition. Gen. Musharraf, during his visit to Britain urged the multinational forces to hasten their departure from Iraq by training local troops more quickly.
