Ready for talks with naxals: Naveen

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR, DEC. 16. The Orissa Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, has reiterated that his Government is ready to hold talks with left-wing extremists without any precondition.

Replying to a debate on the supplementary budget of the Home Department in the Assembly last night, Mr. Patnaik said his Government was committed to bringing peace to the naxalite-affected areas and urged the extremists to shun the path of violence.

Observing that the naxal problem was socio-economic in nature, Mr. Patnaik said his Government was concentrating on the development of programmes to contain the situation.

It had given a proposal to the Centre for the construction of a highway from Vijayawada to Ranchi across the naxalite-infested areas.

Withdrawal of cases

It had ordered the withdrawal of 2,500 cases pending against tribals relating to minor offences, besides ordering the withdrawal of 11,500 cases relating to minor forest offences registered against the tribals.
