A clear day

NEW DELHI DEC. 15. The Capital will wake up to mist/shallow fog this Thursday morning, although the sky is likely to be mainly clear over the day. The minimum temperature is likely to be around 8 degree Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperature recorded at Safdarjung was 24.5 and 9.0 degree Celsius, while Palam recorded 24.3 and 8 degree Celsius. While the maximum humidity at Safdarjung was 90 per cent, it was 94 per cent in Palam. The minimum, on the other hand was 37 per cent in Safdarjung and 42 per cent in Palam.

Probe sought

NEW DELHI DEC. 15. Alleging that the Congress-ruled civic administration had given contracts for mid-day meals to firms whose food was of inferior quality, the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Subhash Arya, today demanded a CBI inquiry into the contract deal.

Referring to Tuesday's incident in which some 60 children were taken to hospital following complaints of dizziness after they consumed rajma-rice given to them as mid-day meal, Mr. Arya demanded resignation of the Delhi Mayor, A. R. Verma, and the MCD Standing Committee Chairman, Mukesh Goel, on moral grounds.

Office-bearers

NEW DELHI DEC. 15. The general body of the Delhi Malayalee Association has elected A.V. Bhaskaran as its new president. The meeting also saw the YWCA president, Lilly George, being nominated as the patron of the Association.

Also elected were C.L. Anthony and V.K.N. Nambiar as vice-presidents, P.J. Verghese as general secretary, M.P. Suresh as additional general secretary, K. Sunderasan as treasurer, N. Ramanan as joint treasurer, Gopalan Kutty as the internal auditor and R.G. Kurup as the joint internal auditor.

Nurses protest

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. Over 250 nurses from Central Government-run hospitals in the Capital, including Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Sucheta Kriplani and Kalawati Saran, gathered at the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here today protesting against non-availability of water connection in the Srinivaspuri nurses colony.

The nurses gathered under the umbrella of the Delhi Nurses' Union and sat on dharna demanding that the steps be taken for digging more bore-wells to be established so that water supply can be provided to nurses in the colony at Srinivaspuri at the earliest.

Man arrested

NEW DELHI DEC. 15. A 20-year-old man who allegedly murdered a bus cleaner while he was asleep at Lajpat Nagar on Sunday night has been arrested by the South Delhi police.

According to the police, Virender, was sleeping in a bus when someone smashed his head with a heavy stone. As the owner of the bus could not provide any clue to the incident, the police questioned other employees of the bus owner.

It was then that the police came across Pooran Singh, who worked as a cleaner in another bus. Enquiries revealed that on the night of the murder Pooran had been spotted with Ravi Shankar, who had earlier worked as a cleaner in the same transport company. He was removed due to his misconduct and Virender was employed in his place.

At Pooran's instance, the police tracked down Ravi and detained him for questioning. During interrogation, Ravi confessed to having murdered Virender because he had been given his job.
