Night shelter opened

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 15. To provide shelter to homeless living in the Capital during this winter season, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has decided to open a night shelter in its area till February next year.

At a meeting held here today, the decided that it would provide a temporary night shelter at the NDMC Gwalior Pottery School at Sarojini Nagar from today till February 28, 2005. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, chaired the meeting.

The night shelter will be run by the NDMC's Welfare Department that would provide blankets to all the occupants besides making arrangements for water and power. The free night shelter will remain open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and accommodate 150 homeless persons. St. Columba School situated at Bhai Veer Singh Marg in the Gole Market area is running notably the other night shelter in the NDMC area.

It may be recalled that in October this year, the NDMC had to face a lot of criticism after it evicted around 100 street children and shelter less women from its Palika Hostel on R.K. Ashram Marg near Gole Market where they have been living since January 2004. A number of social activists and volunteers of two non-government organisations -- Prayas and Ashray Adhikar Abhiyan -- had launched a movement against the Council alleging that it had failed to fulfil its social responsibility.
