NEW DELHI, DEC 11. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, today said that the main reason for large-scale poverty even after so many years of Independence was that corruption was rampant in the country. "The condition is such that due to corruption the poor people don't get foodgrains earmarked for them under the PDS system,'' said Mr. Shekhawat while releasing two books, `Patrakarita Ke Naye Pratiman' and `Nishane Par Samay: Samaj Aur Rajniti', authored by senior journalist Santosh Bharatiya. He cautioned that "we have to consider the poor masses as the fifth pillar of our democracy and will have to work for their development, otherwise we will have to face the dire consequences''.
