SI in ACB net

NELLORE: Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Nellore, led by the DSP, Chowdary, trapped the SI of T.P. Gudur Police Station, M. Venkateswarlu, on Wednesday evening at Nellore, while he was reportedly accepting Rs. 5,000 from a person belonging to Narukuru village, to settle a case. On a tip-off, the ACB officials, who were waiting near an ice-cream parlour, at Brindavanam, Nellore, caught the S.I. redhanded, when he was taking the bribe, just outside the parlour.

Man dies in lorry crash

Nellore: A man, Seenaiah, died when two lorries collided on the national highway near Kadanutala village of Bogole mandal on Tuesday. Seenaiah was trying to get into one of the lorries when the mishap occurred.

Two die in road mishap

Chittoor: Two persons were killed and another was injured in a road mishap near Balamurugan Dairy, 3 km from here on the Chennai-Bangalore national highway. A car traveling from Bangalore to Chennai crashed into a lorry traveling from Vellore to Palamaner resulting in the car driver, C.P. Reddy (27) being killed on the spot. Another person, Suresh, died on the way to hospital.

Student's distinction

TIRUPATI: S.N. Aditya of Geethanjali English Medium High School, who secured 555 marks in the SSC public exams in March 2004, has been selected by the State Government for the National Merit Scholarship 2004-05.

Ex-Speaker's gesture

TIRUPATI: A former Speaker of State Assembly, Agarala Eswara Reddi, has donated Rs.1 lakh for the institution of a gold medal in memory of his wife, V. Ramanamma, who passed away recently.

The medal will be presented to a student of Sri Venkateswara Medical College who excels in final year M.B.B.S in the subject Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Professor honoured

TIRUPATI: Intas Polivet, a national journal, has presented a certificate of honour to Md.Hafeez, a professor of parasitology at ANGRAU's College of Veterinary Sciences for his article `A study on the treatment of clinical microfilariasis in buffaloes with Ivermectin.'

Woman killed

CUDDAPAH: A 55-year-old woman, Chenna Narasamma, was hacked to death, allegedly by her grandson, Nagarangaiah, at Khaderabad near Proddatur on Tuesday. Nagarangiah who is said to be addicted to alcohol, allegedly attacked her with a sickle enraged by her refusal to part with money. The accused is still at large.

High-level official team

to visit Chirala

Hyderabad: A high-level official team will visit Chirala shortly for identifying the problems of handloom weavers and solving them. The team will be headed by A.K. Goel, Principal Secretary, Planning, and consist of K. Raju, Commissioner, Rural Development, and others. Pending the visit by this team, the Guntur Collector has deputed district-level officials to the area.

Administrative tribunal's

vacation schedule

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal has announced its calendar of vacations and holidays for 2005. It will be closed from January 10 to 12 (Sankaranthi), from May 2 to June 3 (summer) and October 10 to 14 (Dasara).

The tribunal will also have 19 optional holidays, excluding the general holidays of second Saturdays and Sundays.

Case against father in

child labour case

KURNOOL: A case was registered under Section 14 of Child Labour Act against G. Mohan, father of Srinivasulu, child labourer who was rescued by NCLP officials here on Tuesday. The child was employed in the shop run by his father, who allegedly chained him to prevent running away from the work place.

The boy's family members told the NCLP officials on Wednesday that they were discussing with their relatives about the admission of the child to school.

Lexicon released

HYDERABAD: The Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, on Wednesday released the revised version of the lexicon brought out by the Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh for day-to-day use by journalists.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Shabbir called upon journalists to focus on problems confronting people rather than highlighting individuals. He said the Government would continue its support for training programmes organised by the academy. The dictionary was first published in 1998 by the academy. The Commissioner of Information and Public Relations, K.V. Ramanachari, the outgoing Chairman of Press Academy, I. Venkata Rao, the secretary general of Indian Journalists' Union, K. Sreenivasa Redy, spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Devulapalli Amar assumed charge as chairman of the Press Academy.

Chosen for award

VIJAYAWADA: The national coordinator of Lok Satta, N. Jayaprakash Narayan, has been chosen for the `Dr. Pinnamaneni & Smt. Sita devi Foundation' award for 2004, according to the foundation's managing trustee, C. Nageswara Rao. The award will be presented to Dr. Narayan on December 16, the birth anniversary of Dr. Pinnamaneni at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in the city.

Train service extension

HYDERABAD: The Kacheguda-Sri Satya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam Express will continue to run up to Yeshwanthpur till January 31, 2005.

A South Central Railway release said that the last service from Kacheguda will be on January 30 and the last service from Yeshwanthpur on January 31.

Farmer commits suicide

KURNOOL: A farmer, Rangappa, 60, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Todellapalli in Chagalamarri of Kurnool district on Wednesday.

According to reports, Rangappa had suffered financial losses in the last few years.

Selected for national award

HYDERABAD: The entry to the 47th National Exhibition of Art of City-based Bholekar Srihari, painter, sculptor and print-maker, has been selected for the National Lalit Kala Akademi Award. He received a communication to this effect from Sudhakar Sharma, secretary, last week. The award comprises a cheque for Rs. 50,000, a citation and a memento. The award function will be held in Lucknow in the second week of this month.

Temple festival

KHAMMAM: Mukkoti festival will be organised in the Srisitaramachandraswamy temple at Bhadrachalam from December 12 to 21. Arrangements are being made in a big way for the festival.

Stage artiste dead

NIZAMABAD: A noted stage artiste and `Surabhi' founder at Yellareddy town, Raviraj (58), passed away on Wednesday. He is survived by wife and a daughter and a son.

He presented about 3,000 programmes on the FM Radio, Nizamabad, and staged the roles of `Katikapari' in `Satya Harischandra' and Srikrishna in `Srikrishna Tulabharam'.

Naxalite surrenders

GUNTUR: A dalam member of the Bollapalli Local Guerrilla Squad, Ramadugu Guruvaiah alias Venkatesh, who joined the naxalite movement in 2000, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Jitender, on Wednesday.

Drop in night temperature

Hyderabad: Night temperature in the State is on decline. On Wednesday, the minimum temperature dipped to 11 degree Celsius in Medak, the lowest for the season so far.

Weather was dry in the State. The minimum temperature was below normal at a few places in Rayalaseema and at many places in coastal Andhra and Telangana.

According to a forecast by the Met Office, dry weather will prevail in the State on Thursday.
