Court moved for CBI probe

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI, NOV. 22. A former Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament today filed a public interest litigation petition in the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya.

The petitioner, B.P. Singhal, alleged that the Tamil Nadu police were biased against the Acharya and had falsely implicated him in a murder case.

The manner in which he was arrested indicated the violation of several guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the D.K. Basu case.

The petitioner said the need of the hour was a free and fair probe and only the CBI could do that.

The petition is likely to be mentioned tomorrow for early listing.
